Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is all around us—powering CPUs, graphic cards, gaming sensors, LEDs, solar cells, quantum computing, medicine, and even space telescopes. This program will let you dive into this fascinating field through hands-on experiences in the cutting-edge cleanroom at the Singh Center for Nanotechnology.

Students will create their own micropatterns and microfluidic devices using advanced tools like photolithography, etching, and deposition. Students will synthesize CdSe quantum dots and analyze them with electron microscopy. Students will also characterize various devices made by nanotechnology, such as solar cells and gyroscope sensors, using Arduino.

Assignments are designed to foster creativity, innovation, quantitative analysis, and independent thinking. While prior coursework in Chemistry and Physics is preferred, it is not required.

Dr. Gyusoek Kim

Gyuseok Kim is a Practice Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches ESE 5360: Nanofabrication and Nanocharacterization and the ESAP Nanotechnology course, both of which emphasize experiential, hands-on learning in advanced nanofabrication and characterization. He directs the Master’s Program in Nanotechnology and manages the Graduate Student Fellow (GSF) program, which provides Penn Master’s students with intensive cleanroom-based device fabrication and research experience. In addition, he led a wide range of training and outreach initiatives for K–12 students, undergraduates, graduate students, and underrepresented minorities, including the Community College of Philadelphia internship program, NanoDay, and the Semiconductor and Nanotechnology Initiatives at Penn (SNIP). Prior to joining Penn, he worked as a Senior Engineer at Samsung Electro-Mechanics and as a Research Assistant at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Germany. He received his Ph.D. from Grenoble INP in France and earned his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Seoul National University in South Korea.
